A phenomenological study on experiences of online counseling participants
Kim Tae-Han

Abstract
This phenomenological study adopted Colaizzi` s method to deeply understand who utilized online counseling, their experiences with the counseling mode, and the meaning of participating in the new helping system. Based on in-depth interviews with four female participants, ranging from their 30s and 40s and having experienced positive changes in their life through the new counseling mode, 15 themes and 5 theme clusters were categorized from in-depth interviews with them. The former include ``an unexpected crisis``, ``perpetual difficulties in parenting``, ``loss of parental confidence``, ``uselessness of their husband``, ``uselessness of their neighborhoods``, ``differentiated responses in online counseling``, ``detailed introduction to the counseling``, ``no cost burden of online counseling``, ``convenience of the new counseling mode``, ``their prejudice against off-line counseling``, ``expertise of the counselor``, ``positive feedback on``, ``task & advice structure``, ``cooperated participation``, ``intimacy with therapist, and ``sense of being true``. The latter are were ``a crisis situation``, ``good feeling & trust``, ``comfortable start``, ``accessibility``, and ``good relationship``. Thus, this study proposes suggestions for successful online counseling, based on these research results. These results rebut criticisms that the online counseling mode cannot afford genuine therapeutic relationships between the counselor and the client and, thus, should be geared towards only single-sessioned counseling. Rather, they indicate that online counseling can still resolve clients` complicated issues through therapeutic relationships. Based on these results, this study also presents recommendations for successful online counseling.
